QUANTITATIVE PHYSIOLOGY
We tackle physiological problems at different scales of biological organization: cells, tissues, and organisms. We are particularly interested in understanding a) the mechanisms underlying the dynamic behavior of the studied systems and b) the emergence of collective behaviors as one moves from a finer to a coarser scale of description. We make use of several theoretical and experimental techniques. Among others: mathematical modeling with ode's and pde's, non-linear dynamics, bifurcation theory, stochastic dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, cell biology, microfluidics, phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy, image analysis, etc.
Our current projects include:
- Experimental and theoretical study of T. cruzi motility and infectivity.
- Population dynamics of communities of wild type bacteria.
- Thermodynamic performance of ATP synthase.
- Mathematical modelling of mitochondrial dynamics.
- Glucose homeostasis dynamics.
